About the book: Joseph Pilates was an extraordinary man - focused, determined, full of passion for the body. His enthusiasm for his method is still catching, even though he died almost fifty years ago. When I did research about his childhood in Mönchengladbach I learned that he grew up in a poor metal worker's family. It was a hard life, his three youngest siblings died as babies. But Joseph was also privileged: His father introduced him to gymnastics as a child - and I found evidence that his father practiced heavy athletics - a very new development in sports in the late 19th century! There was another passion Joe inherited from his father: his passion for boxing. The book goes into the detail of this and the influences that led to his second half of his life. It was so different from the first half: In Germany and England he had constantly moved, changing houses, cities, occupation... When he opened his studio in New York he finally settled down. He had found his fate and he stayed. I'd love to travel back in time to his studio just once as a client - though I'm afraid he might throw me out, because I'm not very good at picking up cues. But I think it would still be worth it: just to see him and Clara teaching!
