Hollowing vs. Bracing?

Joan Breibart discusses hollowing vs bracing with Marika Molnar

In her video description she writes, "It seems crazy now, but in the 60s and 70s those of us who were Pilates clients would practice squeezing our butts and doing posterior pelvic tilts while standing in an elevator or waiting in line. Why? This was the "ideal" position when supine on the Reformer and the Cadillac; we were told that "tucking" was correct. By the Nineties, with the introduction of evolved Pilates apparatus, the new ideal became Neutral pelvis -- even though some resisted it.

Now we have a new issue -- hollowing vs bracing.

This is a big discussion so I thought I should ask a real expert -- Marika Molnar PT. And as you might expect, in just a few words she gives us a lot to think about. Starting with body position Supine, Standing, Prone, Seated, etc. And this is why we all need to question whatever some Elder or Pilates teacher says. Fortunately, Pilates is exercise for thinking people."

Marika Molnar PTWe thought this discussion would add value and insight from their perspective when it comes to Osteoporosis treatment, as she Joan indicates, but also to Pilates in general.

Hollowing vs bracing is included in a broader discussion that involves Joan commenting on the idea of the work of "boning up" being 100% Pilates though no specific Pilates moves are involved in the "bone up" exercises.  Marika Molnar also addresses the difference between stability and mobility.

Joan and Marika also touch on their belief about what Joe would think about movements people are doing today and how he would look at it. Consider the movements happening today as a result of technology such as texting, sitting at computers at work all day, having machinery taking care of many of the tasks we used to do manually in the past. Is it possible he would welcome it and see it all as change, and then develop additional apparatus to address the need to work with these types of movements?
